3.00 Credits
Prerequisites: Admission into the Sonography Program This course is an introduction to the profession of sonography and the role of the sonographer in health care. Topics to be covered include history, concepts, techniques, and developments in sonography, patient care, written and verbal communication, ethical/legal issues, professional organizations, and a basic overview of other imaging modalities and their relationship to sonography.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: Admission into the Sonography Program. This course will focus on sonographic scanning techniques and quality patient care procedures for the abdomen and pelvis.Topics include application of transducer manipulations, instrumentation controls, anatomic scanning planes, standard presentation and annotation of ultrasound images, and the practice of patient care skills. Body mechanics and ergonomics will also be discussed.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisites: SON 1000, SON 1100C. This course will give the student an understanding of the structure, function, pathology, and relational anatomy of the abdominal organs. Focus is placed the sonographic visualization of the normal and abnormal abdominal organs to include the pancreas, liver, biliary system, spleen, urinary system, adrenal glands, and vascular structures.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: SON 1111C. This course is a continuation of SON 1111C, with continued focus on sonographic imaging of the abdominal viscera and the pathological processes that affect this area of the body. Also discussed is the correlation of the ultrasound diagnosis with patient history and lab findings
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisites: SON 1111C, SON 1211 Corequisite: SON 1804L. This course is a presentation of the sonographic anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system with or without a pregnancy. Included are pathologic conditions, clinical sonographic presentations, and signs and systems associated with the female pelvis. First trimester obstetrical imaging will be introduced including fetal measurements and development.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisites: SON 1000, SON 1100C. This course provides an understanding of the principles and fundamentals of diagnostic ultrasound physics, and how these apply to clinical practice. Basic acoustical physics and the interaction of acoustical waves in human tissue will be introduced. Emphasis on transducer design and construction, ultrasound in soft tissue, attenuation of sound energy, parameters affecting sound transmission, and resolution of sound beams.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: SON 1211. This course is a continuation of SON 1211, with continued focus on the interaction of ultrasound with tissues, mechanics of ultrasound production and display, equipment maintenance, quality assurance, bioeffects, and image artifacts. Also discussed will be Doppler flow analysis.
-
2.00 Credits
Prerequisites: SON 1111C, SON 1211. This is the first course in clinical education. A supervised clinical experience will be provided for the student to focus on competency of scanning skills during basic sonographic exams. Students develop skills related to protocols, procedures, and patient care.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: SON 2150C Corequisite: SON 2834L. This course will be a comprehensive review of the entire sonography program content to include abdominal, obstetrics/gynecology, physics and instrumentation, and superficial structures. Students will also present case studies and be instructed in resumé preparation.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: SON 1121C Corequisite: SON 2814L. This course is designed to give the student detailed instruction of the role of ultrasound in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. The evaluation of the fetus including anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pathophysiology will be discussed. The focus will be on the normal and abnormal fetal conditions in pregnancy including assessment of gestational age through biometry techniques, sonographic landmarks, and appearance of the fetal head, neck, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, extremities, and heart.
