Prerequisites: OST 1335 and OST 1142C or placement exemption. Students will learn how to compose original documents orally and how to use transcribing equipment and computer technology to produce mailable documents.

Prerequisites: OST 1142C and OST 1711C or placement exemption. Corequisite: HSC 1531. This class will cover the study of grammar and punctuation as it relates to medical language, proper use of medical terminology, and creation of accurate healthcare documentation in accordance with the AHDI Book of Style guidelines. Students will transcribe medical dictation in a variety of specialties while using proper style and methodology, with increasing emphasis on accuracy and speed. Specialties covered include orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, psychology, gastroenterology. Students will be required to become members of AHDI ( Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity).

Students will learn to create, edit, and format text, print and manage files using Microsoft Word. Students are expected to come to this course with knowledge of document formatting. Basic keyboarding skills are strongly encouraged.

Prerequisite: OST 1335 and OST 1142C or placement exemption. This course prepares students to manage an office, set priorities, use new technologies, and supervise office personnel. Procedures in filing, handling mail, telephone techniques and services, itineraries, banking, and arranging meetings and conferences are studied.

Prerequisite: OST1335 and OST 2402C. This course is designed to provide the medical office manager/assistant with the skills necessary to be able to set up and/or maintain a medical office. These skills include - but are not limited to - space management, ordering inventory of equipment and supplies, selection and assignment of staff, job descriptions, employee agreements; payroll, negotiation of and compliance with contracts with health care entities, patients accounts management, insurance billing, insurance appeals, collections and the basic rules of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding.

This course is designed to provide students with an overview of legal and ethical issues in healthcare. The issues to be covered include medical ethics, confidentiality, living wills, legal responsibilities regarding release of information, and medical malpractice. Also covered will be effective communication skills including negotiation in conflict situations.

Prerequisite: OST 1611C; Corequisite: OST 2613C. This is a continuation course from OST 1611C/Medical Transcription I. This class continues skill building in transcribing, proofreading/editing, and correcting healthcare documents with intermediate level dictation. The student will meet increasingly difficult standards of speed and accuracy while demonstrating proper style, punctuation, and understanding of medical terminology. Industry technology and tools such as word expanders, speech recognition, transcription platforms, etc., will be explored. Students will be introduced to the study of human disease processes including signs, symptoms, medications, diagnostic and laboratory testing and appropriate protocol and treatment. Transcription content will include orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology and other medical specialties.

Corequisite: OST 2612C . This is a continuation course from OST 2612C - Medical Transcription II. This class continues skill building in transcribing, proofreading/editing, and correcting healthcare documents with advanced level physician dictation. The student will meet increasingly difficult standards of speed and accuracy while demonstrating proper style, punctuation, and understanding of medical terminology. Transcription content will include cardiovascular/thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, neurosurgery, head & neck surgery among other medical specialties. Students will continue study of human disease processes including signs, symptoms, medications, diagnostic and laboratory testing and appropriate protocol and treatment. Students will be encouraged to attend at least one local, state or national event affiliated with AAMT.

Prerequisite: OST 1711C. This course is designed to increase word-processing skills using Microsoft Word and prepare the student to apply these advanced skills in business related projects. The class is taught by using a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises. The student will learn formatting techniques including, creating web pages and online forms, working with macros and visual basic for applications, creating a master document, an index, a table of contents and working with XML. This class will include integration with other office applications including Excel, PowerPoint & Access. Student completing OST 1711C and OST 2723C will be prepared to take the Microsoft Office Specialist exam.

Prerequisite: OST 2613C. The medical transcription practicum applies the skills learned in the medical transcription program to practical experiences. Students will be placed at practicum sites and are required to complete a minimum of 120 hours transcribing authentic "real-word" physician dictation in compliance with AHDIguidelines. Students will be evaluated a minimum of every 30 hours during the practicum and the progress will be documented. Students not demonstrating entry-level employment skills will be required to complete additional hours or repeat the course until the industry entry-level skills are attained. The Medical Transcription Instructor will work with the Practicum Site Facilitator to assess student progress and placement.
