In this course, students learn to draw the human head and discover the art of portraiture. Students further develop drawing skills, techniques, and traditional approaches to portrait drawing.

Prerequisite: ART 1300C This studio course aims to develop students' ability to render figures and to refine drawing skills and techniques. Working primarily from dry media, students use line and tone to develop an understanding of proportions, structure, movement, rhythm and anatomy of the figure.

Students will be introduced to painting in oils, stressing the development of basic skills based on observation.

Prerequisite: ART 2500C A continuation of Painting I, the course will be a comprehensive, in-depth study of the principles of composition, value and color theory.

This course covers principles and techniques of watercolor painting through exercises in still life, portraiture and landscape. Students are expected to develop skills in and increase their knowledge of transparent techniques. The course is recommended for all students considering careers in art, art education, general design, interior design, fashion illustration, theater design, advertising, drafting, architecture, and mass communications.

Prerequisite: ART 2540C A continuation of Watercolor I, with emphasis on development towards representational mode of painting. The process of building form in each watercolor is a continuous one in which addition and subtraction builds up to an initial bold expression of shape and value. Students will strive for balance of defined and undefined; soft and hard.

Prerequisite: ART 2500C Learn the traditional method of portrait painting in oil. The class will focus on building form through the value of color in the chiaroscuro tradition. Accuracy in drawing and developing the character of the model will be emphasized. Long term poses of several weeks.

This course covers the procurement, design and execution of murals, both interior and exterior. Since the mural projects are usually a joint effort between PCC students, the community members, and governmental institutions, this is a unique opportunity to take part in the diverse process of planning, creating, and exhibiting projects that portray special events. The end product (the mural) serves as a reminder that by working together, we can all take part in community pride. 96

Prerequisite: ART 2570C This continuation of Mural Painting I (ART2570C) is designed for the advanced mural artist. More emphasis is placed on the planning and supervision of the project, along with interaction between the college and the local communities. This course cannot be used in degree programs.

Students will create clay forms with an emphasis on the four hand building methods. Wheel throwing and the making of glazes will be introduced.
