4.00 Credits
Co-requisite or Prerequisite: MAT 1033 This is an introductory course into the basic concepts of chemistry. It is designed for students who have had little, if any, instruction in chemistry. Topics covered include: measurements, the structure of the atom, structure of compounds, the periodic table, chemical equations, basic stoichiometry of equations, states of matter, solutions, acids and bases. Some basic organic chemistry may also be covered. Computations employ the most basic algebra with an emphasis on the factor label method of problem solving. Laboratory experience supports the principles of chemistry developed in the lecture portion of the course.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: One year high school chemistry and high school algebra, or CHM 1025C. Co-requisite or Prerequisite: MAC 1105 This is a study of chemistry covering the following: mathematics and measurement in chemistry; periodic table; stoichiometry of chemical equations and reactions in solution; oxidation-reduction reactions; thermo chemistry; atomic and molecular structure; chemical bonding; gases; intermolecular forces of attraction. Selected experiments reinforce lecture material, with use of computers in the laboratory as an option.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: CHM 1045C or equivalent. This is a study of chemistry covering the following: solutions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium systems, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and introduction to organic chemistry. Selected experiments reinforce lecture material and include qualitative analysis, with use of computers in the laboratory as an option.
-
5.00 Credits
Prerequisite: CHM 1046C or equivalent. This is the beginning course of organic chemistry which covers the following: structure and bonding; polarity of bonds; resonance theory; conformation of cyclic systems; preparation and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, conjugated dienes; benzene chemistry; IR and NMR spectroscopy. Experiments cover techniques of preparation, isolation, and purification of compounds.
