Studies urbanization from the perspectives of multiple disciplines including architecture, photography, art history, music, cultural studies and political science. Major themes include: architectural modernization and cultural change; industrialization and the emergence of professional sports; rural-urban migration and the proliferation of shanty towns; the emergence of mass politics; the expansion of the informal sectors; and the growth of social violence, drugs and crime.
