This module is the first part of a two semester sequence designed to give students an in-depth knowledge of mathematics in elementary schools. Topics in elementary mathematics will be examined from a problem solving and conceptual framework with a view to in-depth understanding of these topics and their interrelationships. Topics will include sets, numeration systems, computational methods, algebraic concepts and number theory. Emphasis will be placed on the use of manipulatives and technology for gaining understanding and solving problems. The approach will integrate the understanding of these topics and their interrelationships with the approaches to teaching these topics in (K-6) classrooms. This is a required content module for all elementary education majors

This module integrates the acquisition of background knowledge of strategic literacy instruction with research-based methods of student behavior and classroom management. Preservice teachers will plan and implement strategic approaches toward improving diverse K-12 students' literacy and content area knowledge within activities and lessons. Additionally, the module focuses on selection of materials for teaching language arts and communication skills. Classroom management strategies are integrated for enhancing preservice teachers' effectiveness. This module is designed, in part, to fulfill requirements mandated by Florida Legislature and the Reading Endorsement (July, 2002 Source).

This module is designed for preservice teacher candidates to engage in learning Social Studies content through a variety of constructivist teaching strategies. Social Studies teaching methods are interwoven with reading strategies and skills, classroom management techniques, technologies and field-based experiences in order to implement the effective teaching of social studies for a wide diversity of students, including English language learners (ELLs).

This module focuses on strategies to integrate technology in teaching and learning in a meaningful way to promote a diversity of students' depth of under-standing of concepts and process and to use productivity tools for assessment. It includes current applications of technology used to plan and design the technology to be integrated into learning experiences.

This module is the second part of a two semester long sequence and is designed to give students a conceptual framework and in-depth knowledge of the mathematics in the elementary school. Topics will include Statistics, Probability & Data Analysis, Geometry and Measurement. Emphasis will be placed on the use of manipulatives and technology for gaining understanding and solving problems. The approach will integrate the understanding of these topics and their interrelationships with the approaches to teaching these topics in K-6 classrooms. This is a required content module for all elementary education majors.

This module is designed for preservice teacher candidates to engage in learning Science content for the elementary school teacher, modeled and practiced using a variety of constructivist teaching strategies. Science teaching methods are interwoven with reading strategies and skills, technologies, classroom management techniques and field experiences necessary to implement the effective teaching of science for a diversity of students, including English language learners (ELLs).

Prerequisite: EDU 103 and EDU 201. This course is designed to prepare Elementary Education Preservice teachers to become effective teachers, behavior and classroom managers, reflective practitioners and leaders, especially in the areas of ESOL and Reading. Reading and ESOL content focuses on Second Language Acquisition theory, the components of language, and reading research. Preservice teachers will study the role of assessment in reading instruction and the foundations of differentiated instruction for struggling readers and English Language Learners (ELLs). This course provides the knowledge base necessary for effective reading instruction. Such effective teaching is based on knowledge of how reading is acquired by diverse K-12 students and how to differentiate instruction to meet all learning needs effectively. To this end, pre-service teachers will learn about current research findings on learning to read, learning how to teach diverse K-12 students reading, and current research on how children learn to read.

8.00 Credits
Prerequisite: ELE 203 and ELE 412. This course explores the basic concepts underlying test construction (both formal and alternative), design, use, administration and interpretation. Standardized, informal, alternative, group and individual tests are studied including ELL assessment and reading assessment. Assessment data collection, analysis and use in improving instruction are a focus. Field experience with assessments will be included.

Three hours per week. May not be repeated. A diagnostic and prescriptive course in basic grammar and writing skills through intensive work on grammar, mechanics, sentences, paragraphs, and brief essays. This course cannot be used to replace University requirements, major requirements, or count in the 120 semester hours required for graduation. However, students who gain exemption scores on both departmental proficiency exam and essay will receive three semester hours degree credit for EH 101.
