    3 credits By magnifying the woven structure of cloth, students will familiarize themselves with its basic structure, along with various characteristics of type. Students will learn basic dyeing techniques necessary to execute their textile designs on cotton or silk cloth. Students will combine the cre ative and the practical aspects of color and composition through studying basic color theory and elements of design. This is a comprehensive studio course covering the techniques of basic weaving, basic textile dyeing, color application and resist methods, and textile printing. Offered: As needed.

    3 credits Focusing on principles of drawing with the needs of the fashion illus trator in mind, students will work from the model to pursue the basic study of drapery and movement. Assignments are geared toward illustrat ing the mechanics of the body and relating the function of clothing to the human form. The physical properties and appropriate uses of cloth will be examined both historically and through contemporary trends. Emphasis will be placed on techniques suitable for black and white reproduction, but experimentation with a wide variety of drawing and painting tech niques, as well as basic color theory as it applies to this course, will be introduced.     3 credits This course will cover the Ancient Near East, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and the medieval periods as well as the Renaissance up to the present in the history of western art. A comparative survey of painting, sculpture and architecture will take place through slide lectures and discussion. Field trips to museums are an integral aspect of the course. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This study of non-European art will present the contextual development of various cultures outside of the sphere of European influence. This course offers a formal study of the visual arts; painting, sculpture, architecture, functional crafts, textiles and collage from prehistoric Mesopotamia to 20th century Native America. Field research at museums to view original works of time honored non-European art and techniques is an integral component of this course. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This course is designed to develop further the various techniques, concepts, and materials that were introduced in Basic Drawing. The stu dent will also be encouraged to explore the possibilities of abstract and non-objective art. In addition to classwork, a sketchbook is required. Prerequisite: VIS 1009A. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits The techniques of printing in relief will be explored through the use of linoleum and wood blocks. Students will create drawings and designs, transfer them onto blocks, and cut and print them in limited editions. The use of multiple color prints will also be explored. A sketchbook with notes on methods and techniques is required. Prerequisite: VIS 1009A or permission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits Students will be introduced to basic intaglio techniques, beginning with drypoint and leading to the development of various skills associated with etching. The use of aquatint and softground, as well as mezzotint and engraving incorporated with etching will be explored. A sketchbook that includes sketches and notes on methods and techniques is required. Prerequisite: VIS 1009A or permission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits Color design and composition will be stressed in this class, exploring direct screen and photo-sensitive techniques of serigraphy. Students will create editions on paper, as well as have the opportunity to print on tex tiles. A sketchbook containing notes on technical and conceptual aspects of the course is required. This course complements VIS 1070A, Textile Design I. Prerequisite: VIS 1003A or permission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This course is designed for the artist interested in the basics of monotype and collograph printing. The emphasis will be on learning techniques with and without the use of the etching press. Students will start with black and white to discover the potential of the medium and then work with color. Focus will be placed on experimenting with inks, developing an image with various materials (collage technique), and creating a related series of unique prints. Additional inking techniques, chine collé, and mul tiple-plate printing will be presented. Prerequisite: VIS 1003A. Offered: 2008 - 2010.
