3 credits A study of the ways of living of Native Americans, modes of livelihood, economics, social and political organization, art and religion. Traditional cultures and their development, the impact of Hispanic and Anglo society and current status and problems are considered. Emphasis will be on the peoples of North America. 3 credits An investigation of the ways of life of historically recent and remote hunters and gatherers, with a focus on the !Kung of southern Africa. Through a case study of the !Kung this course addresses such crucial issues as whether hunters and gatherers lacked property and central authority, and maintained a society based upon sharing and the equal sta tus of all, including equality between men and women. The course ends with an analysis of the relevance of hunters or gatherers to our under standing of the nature of human evolution. Offered: Upon request.

This course, aimed at students from a vari ety of disciplinary backgrounds, helps the student understand all of the various social phenomena-from gender issues, to ethnicity, race, and the family-which are reflected in the schools, and affected by them as well. 3 credits Aging is a process experienced by all humans, but the world's cultures vary greatly in how they conceive of age and aging, and in their treatment of the elderly. This course will teach the student about the wide variety of cultural perspectives on aging. By learning how other cultures deal with age, the student will have a greater understanding of the aging process itself, and will learn alternate models for more humane treatment of the elderly. 3 credits Survey of the culture of the peoples of Africa south of the Sahara. Modes of livelihood; economics, political, and social organization; art; lit erature; and religion. Emphasizes cultures in the period preceding the impact of Western culture. Considers colonial and post-colonial situa tions, as well as physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. 3 credits A critical examination, using ethnographic case studies, of the ways of life in socially simple (so-called "primitive") societies and in thecountry side in more complex societies.
