    3 credits Students will examine principles of face-to-face and machine assisted interpersonal communication in various contexts, including the family, friendships and professional settings. Emphasis will be placed on helping students develop skills to improve their own communication strategies and practices.     3 credits An investigation of various aspects of non-verbal communication, their relationship to verbal communication and their effects on human behavior. Topics will include proxemics, kinesics, eye gaze, facial expression, environmental effects and intercultural practices. This course is designed as a strongly advised discipline elective for Speech and Dramatic Art majors and other qualified students at the junior or senior level.     3 credits A second level course in American Sign Language designed to assist students in gaining additional linguistic competence both expressively and receptively. Students will also gain an understanding of the American Deaf Community and its culture. Students will use a conversational approach to learning ASL that challenges them to apply previously learned material while integrating new skills and cultural knowledge into level II coursework.     3 credits In an increasingly global society, the ability to communicate with people of other cultures is essential. In this class students will study and apply principles of intercultural communication, including the role of disclosure, nonverbal communication, language, context, cultural identity, and perception. Students will also understand obstacles to effective intercultural communication, including bias, uncertainty avoidance and differing coding practices. Throughout the course, students will study particular cultures and subcultures in order to appreciate their unique styles of communication. Prerequisites: SPH 1004A or junior or senior standing, or permission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010

    3 credits A seminar in which students examine and discuss issues in communication, developing research projects, and sharing insights on a broad range of topics concerning oral, dramatic, and mass-mediated communi cation. Issues may include censorship, freedom of speech, propaganda, government regulation, privacy rights, and the representation of diverse cultures in the media and on stage. Prerequisites: Communication Arts major and senior standing; or permission of department coordinator. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    1 - 12 credits An opportunity for students studying speech communication to gain practical experience in an actual work environment under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Students may work in a variety of settings, including public relations agencies, customer relations offices, non-profit or public organizations, or other appropriate areas approved by the faculty supervi sor. Students complete assignments given by the Career Services office as well as those assigned by the faculty supervisor, including a ten-page paper reflecting on their experience. The student will report to the facul ty advisor about his/her progress over the course of the internship. Refer to the Career Services section in this catalog for more details on internships.     3 credits This course is designed to improve speaking fluency and listening comprehension in Spanish. Students focus on accuracy in grammar and enunciation, social appropriateness of speech register, and techniques to increase fluency and comprehension. Course objectives comply with cur rent ACTFL guidelines for Intermediate Proficiency in Spoken Spanish. Prerequisite: One year of college Spanish, or Regents Certification in Spanish, or permission of the instructor and Department Coordinator. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits A basic study of Spanish grammar and composition. This course is also an introduction to creative writing. Different written expressions of the Spanish language are studied and thoroughly examined in this course. Reading, translation, and oral reports are essential.
