3 credits This course is an introduction to the history, literatures, and religions of early Christianity. The goal of this course is the study of the historical, social, political, and religious issues that were formative for Early Christianity. The focus of the course is on the symbols of the messiah, church, and salvation. Topics studied include early Christian history, myth, ritual, and ethics. Readings are drawn from the New Testament, the Nag Hammadi Library, Patristic writings, and noncanonical sources. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

1 credit This course will provide instruction in Krav Maga, the official system of defensive tactics used in the Israeli Defense and Security Forces. The course will teach non-lethal methods of subduing and controlling assailants. Students will learn to defend against common "street"situa tions, including those involving weapons, by utilizing natural reactions to defuse dangerous situations. Students are evaluated Pass/Fail. 1 credit Martial Art of Master Ueshiba, based on the principles of spiritual har mony and non-aggression. The art of self-defense focuses on relaxation and passive power of mind/body Ki (energy) circular techniques, including escapes, throws, and subduing by the use of wrist and elbow bending with numerous body movements. Self protection includes back and forward rolling. Develops self confidence for men and women through lecture, demonstration, and class participation. Students are evaluated Pass/Fail. 1 credit Yoga for Health and Well-Being introduces students to this ancient science of well-being. Learning to listen to the wisdom of the body guides the practitioner in making health, life-enhancing decisions. Each class, a body- mind-spirit-experience, will include the philosophy of yoga, as well as a centering meditation, stretching, breathing techniques, yoga postures and deep relaxation. These activities release muscle tension, increase flexibility, strengthen the immune system, transform stress, expand awareness, and improve alignment and balance both on and off the mat. While the performance of the form exercises your entire body, you will feel relaxed and energized.
