The first half of the course will examine slavery, abolition ism, the Mexican-American War, and the crises of the 1850s. Civil War top ics will comprise all major battles, tactics and strategy, economics, diplo macy, weapons, soldier life and medicine.     3 credits A history of the American presidency, from its creation to the present day, using a topical approach. Topics will include inaugurations, vice presidents, cabinets, economic policy, diplomacy, military action, public opinion, scandals and historians' evaluations of presidential greatness and failures. Classroom study will also examine the role of First Ladies and the human aspects of presidents, including character and personalities, speaking styles, health crises, families, and Camp David activities. A research paper will stress use of primary sources and original historical interpretation. Prerequisite: HST 1021A or HST 1022A, or permission of instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.
