3 credits The course deals with authors whose background and subject matter take them outside the conventional boundaries of British literature. A sub stantial body of writing, dealing with life in African countries, Australia, and New Zealand, Canada, the Caribbean, India, and the South Pacific address the aftermath of imperialism. Central to the concern of the course is the exploration of literature as a response to colonial dominance and as an agency in the construction of new national and individual identities. Readings include works by authors such as Kincaid, Gordimer, Hazard, Hulme, Vassanji, Kogawa, Mukherjee, and Naipaul, among others. Prerequisites: ENG 1001A and sophomore standing and beyond. 3 credits The course traces the history of the Gothic novel beginning in 1765 with Walpole's The Castle of Otranto through the twentieth century, focus ing on English/Irish authors such as Radcliffe, Godwin, Lewis, Maturin, Hogg, Stevenson, Stoker, and Le Fanu as well as American Gothic authors such as Poe, James, and Faulkner. Works include such texts as: Alice In Wonderland, the Oz books of L.
