The course addresses New York State Learning Standards in the content areas of mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies. Prerequisite: EDU 2183N. Corequisite: EDU 3110N.     3 credits A continuation of EDU 3102N, which requires three half-days of field-work per week in grades K-2 for 9 hours per week (approximately 125 hours). In the accompanying seminar, the following will be covered (1) development of activity/lesson and unit plan utilizing the NYSSS for each of the three grade levels; (2) learning processes, motivation, and classroom management including student-teaching ethics; (3) successful implementation of strategies for dealing with multicultural and socioeconomically disadvantaged children.     3 credits Provides students with the knowledge and skills to teach elementary science in accordance with the Learning Standards in Mathematics, Science, and Technology. The course reviews the concepts and processes of elementary science and how these can be taught using a variety of methods. Emphasis is placed on the implementation of "hands on science" in the classroom. Deductive and inductive reasoning are used to reach mathematical conclusions to solve scientific problems. Particular attention is given the National and State learning standards to model content, teaching and assessment with emphasis on the New York State Assessments. Students are also taught how to integrate literacy acquisition and the Learning Standards for Health, Physical Education and Home Economics into the teaching of science and mathematics.     3 credits This is a continuation of the topics covered in EDU 3146 - Literacy Acquisition I. It adds the opportunity for students to formulate a professional philosophy of language and learning, develop a knowledge of class room programs and language learning engagements appropriate for school age students, and to develop instructional strategies that con tribute to communication competence and performance. The New York State Learning Standards, introduced in Literacy Acquisition I, are reviewed and applied to the content of this course. Prerequisites for Elementary Education Majors: EDU 3103A, EDU 3104A, EDU 3146A, and a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.     3 credits The purpose of this course is to teach the literacy skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing to native English speakers and to students who are English language learners in grades 5-12. Emphasis is on meth ods of reading enrichment and remediation and strategies and materials that facilitate comprehension of content area textbooks. Prerequisites: EDU 3146N, EDU 4149N*.     3 credits The purpose of this course is to have individuals develop and demonstrate newer instructional techniques and a deeper understanding of the creative arts and movement sciences in the educational of children. Emphasis is on the teacher's role as facilitator of learning the cognitive processes associated with non-formal learning through play and interaction in natural settings. This performance- based course also examines the integrated practices required for the development of pedagogical content knowledge for diverse learners in a variety of inclusive and informal settings.
