A study of the fantastic in literature. Such genres as science fiction, horror, fantasy, and detective fiction may be explored. The instructor will choose a specific genre to focus upon during the term and representative texts from that genre will be used to examine its key themes and issues . Spring semester.

Individual rebels challenge commonly held spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, political, and economic values. Rebels who can organize large groups can, and have, overthrown nations. This course will take a close look at the individual rebel and at least one major revolution. Spring semester evey 3 years.

This course will focus on various authors and texts to explore the comparative and contrasting challenges faced among various ethnic and minority groups, as identified by ethnicity, gender, sexual or religious orientation, and other valid signifiers of "otherness." It will examine the connections and distinctions among dominant and marginalized cultures, as well as minorities' quest for both individual and group identity. This course may be repeated for credit, provided the post-colon subject matter is different. Alternate spring. This course will analyze three of the most common themes in literature and the arts in general. Various authors and texts will be examined in order to explore the connections and differences between love, sex and identity. Spring semester every 3 years.

This class will be a workshop where students will be introduced to the writing of poetry. Each student will be encouraged and helped to develop his/her poetic talents. Emphasis will be placed on the actual language of the poems and the extent to which the students succeed in saying what they set out to say.

Workshop in writing for theatre: characterization, plotting dramatic action, and dialogue.

Students may write many short papers on technical matters. Typical description, memoranda, information reports, and a somewhat lengthy formal report. Students learn the shorter paragraph and shorter sentence style of the technical writer. Spring semester.

An introduction to the skills necessary for preparing copy in relation to graphic design and layout. Students will study techniques applicable to radio, television, newspaper and magazine advertising and writing. Alternate fall semester.

A workshop teaching the 5-W news story as a model for the writing process. Required for most professional writing options. Every semester.

1.00 Credits
A workshop concentrating on work at a campus publication. Open to reporters, editors and staff of campus newspapers, journals, newsletters, or public information centers. The workshop meets one hour per week, requires seven to ten hours per week of work at the publication and is usually taken for one credit each semester. May be repeated for up to six credits. Every semester.
