Surveys critical, epistemological, social, scientific, pedagogical, philosophical, and legal perspectives on communication, exploring the constitutive relationship between communication and knowledge formation. Students engage communication scholarship as a social activity and become acclimated to the function of a discipline in creating a professional identity. Prereq: Undergraduates with senior standing may enroll with permission of instructor.

Attention is also given to major types of personal relationships, such as marriage and friendship, and how communication reflects and determines the dynamics of those relationships.
