A flexible format that permits courses to be taught in various areas of the world. Cultures of the Himalayas. Concerned broadly with contemporary Himalayan culture. Focuses on Tibetan cultures and the Tibetan diaspora, and the Nepalese (Newari) culture of the Katmandu Valley. The goals for this course are: to acquaint the student with social, political and cultural features of this part of the world; to teach, through directed field experiences, how cultural anthropology is practiced; to understand how the process of tourism differs from the study of anthropology; how tourism, however it is practiced, changes in fundamental ways those subject to it. The Arts of Self and Society in Contemporary China. An intensive introduction to contemporary conditions and issues in the People’s Republic of China, including social relations, popular culture, eating practices, religious practices and everyday life. Uses a combination of readings, lectures, field trips to local sites and ethnographic field projects. Usually situated in Kunming, Yunnan province, in southwest China, but the location may vary. Note: Students enroll additionally in Chinese language classes at levels from beginning to advanced. Prereq: Permission of instructor. Cross-listed with ANTH 5995.
