ENGL G161H: World Lit Since Renais. Hon
3.00 Credits
Golden West College
Formerly known as ENGL G165H. As in the regular course, we evaluate classic works in terms of their formal properties, significance, historical context and treatment of abiding issues relevant to our time. Using a comparative approach, this class intensifies the focus on critical thinking and research, adding emphasis to connections with such extra-literary fields as biology, economics, history, philosophy and psychology. Applying techniques learned from linguistics and philology, we contemplate problems involved in translation and consider the kinds of significance generated by style. We also delve more deeply into theoretical approaches to literature, examining their assumptions and the ways methodology can affect our interpretation.
