An examination of Korean society and culture in tumultuous transition, focusing on some new challenges for the Choson Dynasty and its abortive reform effort, external imperialist pressures, and the Japanese colonial rule. Topics include the national liberation, origins of conflict between two rival regimes, South Korea's emergence as a major player in the international political economy, some salient characteristics of the North Korean Marxist state, triumph of democracy, and prospect for reunification.
