Introduction to ethnology/ethnography, comparative research and theory, culminating in processes of discovery and hypotheses testing using world cultural databases to which students can contribute. Prerequisite: satisfaction of the lower-division writing requirement. ( VIII)

Students explore society through presentation, interpretation, and discussion of their own photographs. A few common exercises at the beginning of the quarter are followed by individual projects. Photography as social observation and the relation of photographs in an essay are stressed. Prerequisite: basic darkroom techniques or the digital equivalent.
