The terminal course in the Musculoskeletal sequence. Intended to offer the student an opportunity to engage in an intensive and comprehensive emersion into the management of the patient with musculoskeletal dysfunction leading to effective clinical practice. Prerequisite, PT8254.

The sixth of six supervised education courses, which provides students an opportunity to integrate previously learned academic coursework into actual clinical practice, culminating with entry level performance at conclusion of all clinical education courses.

Examination, assessment, and treatment planning for individuals with neuromuscular conditions involving the spinal cord, traumatic and non-traumatic, and vestibular system. Prerequisites, PT 8143 Neuromuscular I, PT 7314 Physiology, PT 7224 Neuroscience.

Evaluation, assessment, and treatment planning for individuals with brain injury due to cerebrovascular accident, traumatic brain injury, tumor or infection,management of patients with Parkinson?s disease, Huntington?s disease and complex neuromuscular problems. Prerequisite, PT 8753 Neuromuscular III.

Models for clinical reasoning and decision making, factors influencing clinical decisions, management of complex patient problems.

Introduction to fundamentals of physical therapy patient care. PTA courses are only open to students admitted to the professional program. Summer.

Introduction to basic principles of musculoskeletal examination and evaluation of the human body. Students learn components of a patient history, systems review, observation and physical examination. Goniometry, muscle testing, sensory and reflex testing, functional assessment, special tests, palpation, posture analysis and gait analysis are covered. PTA courses are only open to students admitted to the professional program. Summer.

Students review passive, active and active assistive range of motion skills. Resistance exercise and the use of exercise equipment are practiced. Stretching and joint mobilization for specific diagnoses that are appropriate for the PTA to perform are practiced. PTA courses are only open to students admitted to the professional program. Fall.

Basic principles and techniques of massage and application of modalities are presented. An investigation into the risk factors and pathophysiological considerations associated with integumentary diseases and conditions as well as aseptic technique and universal precautions is provided. PTA courses are only open to students admitted to the professional program. Fall.
