3 cr, 3 lec This is an English language course focusing on the linguistic structures, organizational patterns, and rhetorical features of written English. Students will work on both fluency and accuracy in their writing. Along with activities to improve English language skills, students will also review and enlarge their understanding of the vocabulary and concepts used in advanced writing courses. Methods will be directed to students whose native language is not English. PRE: ESL 94G or a proficient entrance score on the ESL placement exam

3 cr, 3 lec This is an English language course focusing on polishing English skills before entering regular academic classes. Attention will be given to the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening to increase confidence and accuracy. Students will learn techniques for improving the four skills and strategies for being successful in an academic program. Instruction will center around themes which will introduce new academic vocabulary and model undergraduate classes. PRE: ESL 95F or a proficient entrance score on the ESL placement exam

Students will learn and apply a variety of techniques designed to improve comprehension of authentic sources of input, especially through use of e-mail, the World Wide Web, videotaping, and oral presentations. PRE: ESL 93L or a proficient entrance score on the ESL placement exam

Students will be exposed to a variety of concepts and techniques designed to increase competence in these areas. Intended for non-native speakers of English who have studied in American high schools (Generation 1.5 students). PRE: 2 1/2 or more years of an American high school, graduate of an American high school within the last 5 years, and CELSA AWC score of ESL Level 2 or higher COREQ: ESL 95X and ORI 101

6 cr, 6 lec Structure 5 incorporates integrated language instruction with an emphasis on high grammatical concepts. Students will be exposed to a variety of grammatical concepts and given the opportunity to use these concepts manipulatively, meaningfully, and communicatively. PRE: ESL 94S NOTE: Students who have exited the ESL program and have gone onto writing classes in the communications division are also welcome if they feel they need structure review, or based on advisement by counselors and advisors.
