1st Semester. Lect. 3, 3 credits. Discussions, research, and reading on the scientific method and its attendant issues in ethics, bioethics, philosophy, and public policies.

Alternate 1st Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. A study of historical and philosophical views on the reasons why societies are formed. The course includes critical discussions of social contract theory, Marxism, natural law, etc. Relations between the individual and society are examined.

Alternate 1st Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. This course examines the primary principles and concepts of common law and the constitutional system, along with the important questions in jurisprudence and legal theory using typical landmark cases. Recommended for pre-law students.

Alternate 2nd Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. An examination of the moral issues raised by the recent advances in medical technology and the changing relationships between health care professionals and their patients. Broader bioethical topics are addressed.

1st and 2nd Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. An examination of reasonable moral judgment as applied to business areas such as marketing, personnel relations, and quality control. The course also includes consideration of corporate ethics, ethics in international business, and moral versus economic values.

Alternate 2nd Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. A study of environmental ethics and related issues, such as the balance between sustainability and growth, controversies regarding naturalistic philosophies, changing perceptions of the relations between nature and culture, and the contemporary significance of various theories of evolution.

2nd Semester. Lect. 3, 3 credits. A study of current and traditional theories of mind. The course studies the ethical and metaphysical meanings of both the materialistic and the vitalistic approaches.

Alternate 1st Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. A survey of the great movements in the philosophies and the religious views of Asia, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, etc. Both traditional texts and contemporary critical reflections will be studied.

Alternate 1st Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. The study of religion from a philosophical perspective, including what philosophy of religion is, as opposed to other forms of religious studies (theology, scripture studies, etc.). The course will concentrate on critical evaluation of religious concepts, including the idea of religious practice itself.

Alternate 2nd Semesters. Lect. 3, 3 credits. The course examines the relationship of philosophical ideas to the concerns and ideas of thinkers from Africa and the Diaspora. Metaphysics and areas of values, e.g., social, political, ethical, and aesthetic, are reflected upon through the prism of Africana thought.
