This course is a presentation of basic principles and current concepts in general microbiology, the sanitary scienes, host-parasite interactions, the immune rsponse, and pathogenic microbiology with public health applications. Prerequisites: Anatomy 0125, Chemistry 0221 and 0222, Chemistry Lab 0223 and 0224.

1st Semester. Lect. 0, Lab 2, 1 credit. This course consists of three blocks of study. The first block provides basis introductory level information relative to bioethical concepts and considerations in the medical profession. The second block investigates the basic principles of molecular biology and biotechnology and the third block provides "hands-on" experience with various computer applications.

2nd Semester. Lect. 2; Lab 4, 4 credits. This course deals with basic principles of medical microbiology that are of importance to the veterinarian. Emphasis is placed on current information related to basic and sanitary microbiology, and the biology of pathogenic bacterial and mycotic agents of clinical and practical importance.

1st Semester, Lect. 0; Lab 2, 1 credit. This course covers general laboratory for MBIO 0412 and MBIO 0413.

1st and 2nd Semesters . Lect. 3, Lab 0, 3 credits. This course deals with historic and contemporary issues related to foods of animal origin. Emphasis is placed on food safety and quality control from production to consumption.

1st and 2nd Semesters. Lect. 3, Lab 0, 3 credits. This course encompasses veterinary medical and allied health topics related to key employment practices and policies. Emphasis is placed on the public health sectors of veterinary medicine and the allied sciences at the international, national, state, and local levels.

2nd Semester. Lec. 1, Lab 4, 3 credits. In this course, a basic introduction to research and research methodology is provided. Current research topics that emphasize pathogenic mechanisms of infectious microbes of importance in animal diseases are discussed. Participants are provided an opportunity to utilize various immunologic and molecular biologic techniques that have application in microbial research, such as immunodiffusion analysis, electrophoresis, cell-mediated immune assays, immunofluorescent, ELISA=s, DNA isolation, restriction enzyme digest, DNA amplication (PCR), and nucleic acid probing. Prerequisite: MBIO 0411 and MBIO 0412 or their equivalent, and approval of the course coordinator.
