This course is a survey of postwar Japanese cinema. We examine seminal works by key directors-including Kurosawa Akira, Ozu Yasujiro, Oshima Nagisa, Miike takashi, Mlyazaki Hayao, and Kurosawa Kiyoshi. All films are 'Japanese' (while the question of 'national cinema' is one of the questions this course will raise) with English subtitles. Background in cinema studies is a plus, but all students interested in cinema are welcome. 3 Lect Hrs, 3 Credits.

A course in written and spoken Japanese beyond the intermediate level. The main goal is to develop reading proficiency by extensive exposure to different types of written material. Building-up vocabulary as tool for intellectual communication will also be emphasized, together with the acquisition of additional 200 kanji, making the cumulative total to about 750.
