The roots of Italian culture lie in both the middle ages and in the Greco-Roman heritage of the peninsula. These traditions continue into contemporary Italian life, giving coherence and a unifying identity to a land formed of distinct regions, linguistic groups, and sociohistorical experiences. The course explores how succeeding generations integrated and reinterpreted their cultural past in literature, the fine arts, philosophical thought, and social history from the fourteenth to the twentieth century.
