ENGLISH G276-1: Art of Life Writing #6906
3.00 Credits
University of Massachusetts-Boston
TT 8:00 SARNO In this course we will be reading and discussing books by Susan Cheever, Bob Dylan, Sam Shepard, Roland Merullo, Joan Didion, Susanna Kaysen, Andre Dubus and others. Although the reading list is comprised primarily of memoir, additional essays, literary works and critical articles will be assigned. We will also address biography and "autobiographical" fiction. Students will discover the differences in literary genres as well as some of the common elements of a successful work of literature - whether it be fiction or non fiction There will be several writing assignments. These essays will focus on the works assigned, but will also include your own life writing exercises. Some of your homework will be presented in 'workshop' fashion. Student ideas, interpretations and responses matter; class participation constitutes a major component of this course. Political correctness will not be necessary; respect, sensitivity and appreciation of others' opinions will be mandatory.

ENGLISH L221: Intro to Asian American Literature #13021
3.00 Credits
University of Massachusetts-Boston
TT 11:00 IWANAGA DISTRIBUTION I: P DIVERSITY U.S. What is unique (or universal) about the writing of Asian American authors Can or should a distinction be made between American literature and Asian American literature in particular Students will be asked to keep those questions in mind as they read texts by authors who trace their ancestry to East, South East, and South Asia. Relevant historical contexts will be considered, including the internment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II. My hope is that students who take this course will not only enjoy literature they might otherwise overlook, but also gain a greater awareness of the forces that have shaped and continue to shape the formation of their own identities (whether or not they are of Asian descent) and the identity of America itself.
