ConstructionThis course is designed to inform and instruct the student about the characteristics of building design in relation to the structural integrity of buildings and how that integrity is compromised during fires. It also will attempt to show how different natural and human-made forces work together to weaken a building, especially one that has been or is being remodeled. A discussion of the need and purpose of strong building codes and their corresponding enforcement will also be included. By use of case studies of major high rise fires, conclusions will be drawn that buildings designed and depicted as fire resistive are by their very nature not fire safe.
