Occupational Therapy 4 Credits Normal and abnormal pediatric development is addressed. Etiology, signs, symptoms, management, and occupational therapy concerns of neurological, orthopedic, systemic, traumatic, learning, psychosocial, and developmental disorders are surveyed. Assessment and treatment media in pediatric settings are addressed. Students learn several assessments from different frames of reference. A focus is on the most commonly used clinical assessments, including the MAP, SIPT, play observation, and parent interviews. Treatment approaches cover medical, community, and school-based practice. Occupational Therapy 4 Credits Low and high technology in occupational therapy is covered in this course. Assistive devices, computer equipment, splitting, and adapted toys are addressed in treatment. OT Fact, OT Source, and World Wide Web sites of interest to occupational therapy are covered. Mastery of equipment used to fabricate activity equipment or materials such as power tools, advanced splinting materials, craft equipment, computer desktop publishing, sewing machines, and/or hand tools. Occupational Therapy 1 Credit This advanced seminar studies occupational therapy treatment principles and applications using the single case model. To be taken concurrently with Level II Fieldwork. This class meets online with the academic fieldwork coordinator. Study methods for the NBCOT exam are addressed, as well as licensure procedures. Occupational Therapy 8 Credits Supervised field experiences provide the student therapist with an opportunity to apply theory and clinical reasoning skills to the assessment and treatment of people with disabilities in a variety of settings. The fieldwork experience is arranged and coordinated by the academic fieldwork coordinator according to the requirements of the American Occupational Therapy Association ACOTE Committee and the Department of Occupational Therapy. Clinical experiences may not be located near the student’s home. Students are required to complete 24 weeks of full-time Level II fieldwork following completion of all academic courses. Fieldwork must be completed within 24 months of class. The fieldwork experience is designed to provide an in-depth experience in delivering OT services to clients, focusing on purposeful and meaningful occupation. The student shall be exposed to a variety of individuals across the life span and to a variety of settings. The fieldwork experience shall promote clinical reasoning and reflective practice to transmit the values and beliefs that enable ethical practice and to develop professionalism and competence as career responsibilities. The goal of Level II fieldwork is to develop competent, entry-level generalist occupational therapy. Transportation to and from the fieldwork site is the responsibility of the student. The sequence and dates of the fieldwork placement may be altered depending on the availability of placement sites, or need for federal financial aid. Physics 3 Credits This course is an introduction to the elements of physical science and is designed for non-science majors. Demonstrations and laboratory experiences emphasize particular applications relevant to the elementary classroom. Topics covered will include the scientific method as well as the chemical principles and properties of matter, the structure of atoms and molecules, the different forms of energy, gravity, mechanics, electricity, magnetism, meteorology, and geology.
