Case studies, readings, films, videotapes and other resources are used to examine folk medical knowledge, religious healing and cross-cultural studies of health behavior from an anthropological point of view. Other topics covered include folk medical practices in major American ethnic, minority, social class and subcultural groups. The resistance of Third World populations to changing their health beliefs and practices is explored. The place of trance, possession, sorcery and altered states of consciousness in healing rituals is examined. Prerequisites: ANTH 211, SOCY 101 or consent of instructor.
