Helps the student become a more musical improviser principally in the jazz idiom through a four-pronged approach which involves lis- tening, theory, practice, and performance. Students study, play, and transcribe great jazz solos and invent new melodies. Covers the development of a basic vocabu- lary for improvising. Examines rhythm in jazz and improvisation in the Major, Dorian, Mixoljdian modes and the Blues scale.
