his Lab will be the student actually assuming the duties and responsibilities of the stage manager in the various theatre productions mounted each semester. Students will be assigned to productions as stage managers in the following semester's production. Students will have one year, or two semesters to fulfill the Lab requirement. Fall semester. Advanced level of theatre fundamentals exercised through practice in one or more of the following areas: acting, stagecraft, properties, costumes, or lighting. An introductory course that focuses on the director's responsibilities including pre-production activities: script selection and analysis and development of a directors and production concept, auditioning, casting, and development of a rehearsal schedule. Rehearsal duties: character development, blocking/picturization, rhythm, tempo pace, as well as understanding the relationship between director and the various designers: scenic, lighting, costume, makeup, and sound. Students, in relationship with the Fundamentals of Acting class, will select, audition and direct a final short scene. Every year. Credit: 4

A study of theatrical history, literature, and staging practices in Western and Asian cultures up through the 18th century through readings of selected seminal plays in world theatrical literature, through readings about theatre practices and the social/political/economic forces that affected them, and through individual research and presentations for seminar discussions. Junior or senior standing suggested. Every two years. Credit: 4

A study of theatrical literature, artistic theories and staging practices from the beginning of the 19th century to the present through readings of selected seminal plays in world theatrical literature, through readings about theatre practices and the social/political/economic forces that affected them, and through individual researchand presentations for seminar discussions. Advanced work in children's theatre, makeup design and execution, publicity, box office, or some similar study on a specialized area of theatre that is not covered by another course. Course may be repeated, but THE 397 and THE 497 may not exceed 12 credits. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor and The Arts Division chairperson. Every semester. Credit: 2-4

Further study of the tools and skills good actors develop and use will be explored: physical and vocal exercises, script analysis and character development, improvisational exercises for specific character development, period acting explorations, and applications of those skills with monologues, scenes and/or a play. Prerequisite(s): THE 211A and permission of instructor. At least every two years. Credit: 4
