This required course will introduce first-year students to the basic principles of physical fitness such as cardiopulmonary and musculoskeletal health through: initial fitness assessments, personal goal setting, routine physical activity instruction and post-assessment, evaluation and personal goal adjustments. Course objectives include exposing students to a cross section of all the program offerings and the fitness and recreation center and to help them develop lifelong fitness habits and understanding. Students will participate three times a week for the full semester in one of four physical activity options including: WATER EXERCISE -- includes both cardiovascular and resistance training through a variety of water activities. Water exercise is an effective way to get a workout with minimal impact or stress on the joints; CARDIO-MIX -- includes a diverse sampling of the various group fitness classes offered year round at the FRC (Step Aerobics, Kick Boxing, Total Body BOSU and more); PLAY FIT includes a variety of recreational and sport-oriented games from Alaskan Baseball to Kickball to Ultimate Frisbee. Games selected are intentionally active and may be inside or outdoors; STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING -- includes both strength and cardiovascular training. Participants will learn the basic resistance, cardio and flexibility training techniques and principles and how to maximize use of the equipment at the FRC. VARSITY ATHLETE LAB includes a variety of activities designed to improve the varsity athlete's conditioning, quickness and strength. This class includes plyometrics, agilities, strength exercises, functional training and more. Must be taken during the first year. Every semester. Credit: 0

Introduction to lifetime sports of badminton and tennis. Instruction includes a wide variety of shots ranging from powerful smashes to delicate drop shots. Also introduces strategies of both singles and doubles play. (Pass/Fail only) Every fall. Credit: 2

A study of individual, dual or team sports, fitness activity, multicultural movement form, or coaching specialty. Topics may include volleyball, wilderness skills, self-defense, yoga, golf, field hockey coaching, or coaching women's sports. May be repeated for credit when topic varies. (Pass/Fail option) Every year. Credit: 2

An opportunity to practice learned skills in a physical education instructional environment supervised by a professional. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every semester. Credit: 2

An opportunity to investigate selected topics or problems in physical education under the direction of a division faculty member. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every semester. Credit: 2

Supervised opportunity to use and develop knowledge and skills in a combination of physical education, health, and nutrition areas. Selection and placement is determined cooperatively by the internship coordinator, student, program advisor, and internship supervisor. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Methods and practice in analysis and the detection of good and bad reasoning. Some formal logic, but primary emphasis on informal techniques of distinguishing solid arguments from fallacious ones in both text and speech, and in both formal and everyday contexts. Every year. Credit: 4

Critical examination of a number of current ethical problems in applied ethics. Includes both classical and contemporary writings on problems such as abortion, suicide, civil disobedience, euthanasia, pornography, and economic justice. Every year. Credit: 4
