    Intensive study of French language and culture at either Universite du Maine in LeMans, France or at Universite d'Angers. Students earn 12-16 credits for a combination of coursework in such topics as grammar, literature, cultural studies and other topics pertinent to their majors. May be repeated for a total of up to 32 credits. Prerequisite(s): At least two semesters of college French and permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every year. Credit: 1-16

    This course provides experiential learning of the biotic and abiotic factors that govern tropical island ecosystems (coral reefs, grass beds, mangroves, dry Antillean scrub and moist mature forests) found on a typical Caribbean tropical island (St. John, USVI). Concepts addressed include: biodiversity, adaptation and co-evolution, and energy flow in these systems. All students will participate in a collaborative research project with island fauna and daily lessons on island ecology. Students will also learn about the cultural history of the West Indies and contemporary human-caused environmental problems associated with island development. Intensive field work includes daily snorkeling and strenuous hiking to field locations. Assessments will include a field journal, written assignments, and pre-and post course examinations covering course text, on-site lessons, and assigned technical papers.     Concentrates on composition skills required for success in college, emphasizing the process of writing and fundamentals of English grammar and usage. Students assigned on the basis of placement testing. Students must pass LIA 102 Intensive English with a grade of C- or higher in order to take ENG 100.     An introduction to digital photography for visual communication and creative expression. Topics include basic and advanced operation of digital cameras, photographic lighting, exposure, composition, elements of design, focal length and perspective, and image presentation. Genres will include documentary photography, photojournalism, portraiture, still life, sports/action, low light photography, architectural, and travel photography. Course includes on-campus classes and a field trip to England and Spain. Students will produce a portfolio in the form of a bound, hardcover book. A trip fee will be charged. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor. Every year. Credit: 4

    Exposure to practical problems relating to the student's academic major. The experience may include work for a social or governmental agency or for business or industry. Proposals should be developed in consultation with a faculty member and submitted in writing to the Dean of Academic Services for approval by the Individualized Program Council prior to registration. At the conclusion of the work period, the student submits a comprehensive report on the experience to the supervising faculty member. Available only to students in liberal arts. No student is allowed to take more than sixteen credits in LIA 396. Credits will be allowed on the basis of 32 work hours for each credit. (Pass/Fail only) Prerequisite(s): Approval of instructor and the Individualized Program Council. Every semester. Credit: 4-16

    Proposals are to be developed in consultation with a faculty member and submitted in writing to the Dean of Academic Services for approval by the Individualized Program Council prior to registration. At the conclusion of the work period, the student submits a comprehensive report on the experience to the supervising faculty member. No student is allowed to take more than 12 credits of LIA 397. Course is designed for liberal arts students only, although other students may be approved upon the merits of their proposal. Prerequisite(s): Approval of instructor and the Individualized Program Council. Completion of Independent Study Form. Liberal Arts majors only. Every semester. Credit: 4-12

The student submits the thesis to the supervising faculty member. Course cannot be repeated. Course is designed for liberal arts students only, although other student may be approved upon the merits of their proposals.
