    Open to highly qualified senior history majors. Students are expected to write a sophisticated research paper, under the supervision of a faculty sponsor and then defend it at a formal oral examination before the sponsor and at least two other faculty members agreed upon by the student and the sponsor. A research plan must be prepared prior to the term in which the course is taken and must be approved by both the sponsor and a majority of the history faculty members. Ideally, students intending to write a thesis should begin formulating a research topic during the spring of the junior year. This course can be substituted for HTY 400. Prerequisite(s): History majors only; permission of instructor. Every semester. Credit: 4

    This course examines the lives of children and the evolving concept of "childhood" from the colonial era to the present. Looking at social and cultural variability across class, gender, time and race, it offers a nuanced portrait of the nation as it developed. (Pass/Fail option) Every three years. Credit: 4

    (No credit) With prior approval, students may participate in study abroad programs offered by institutions other than UMF. Credit for courses taken abroad should be pre-approved by the student's academic advisor and will be analyzed and awarded as transfer credit after the program has been completed. Registration for this course is required but is for administrative purposes only. Prerequisite(s): Approved for non-UMF international study abroad program. Every semester. Credit: 0

    This course introduces students to the major issues and concepts of international and global studies. This includes the historical development of the international system, as well as economic, geographic, and political influences. Issues analyzed include war, economic interdependence, global poverty, terrorism, globalization, and genocide. Special mphasis is placed on exploring the impact of global politics on the lives of people around the globe. This course is cross listed with POS 136S, World Politics. (This course is cross listed with INS 100S, World Politics. Pass/Fail option) Every semester Credit: 4

    In this interdisciplinary course, students will study various aspects of a foreign culture, travel to another country, and meet in seminars to discuss their observations and reflect upon their experiences. Each student will communicate his/her new understandings through an appropriate medium such as: a collection of reflective writings, sketches, photo essay, web site, or multimedia presentation. A trip fee will be charged in addition to tuition. May be repeated up to a total of 8 credits. Prerequisite(s): Sophomore standing and permission of instructor. Every three years. Credit: 2-4

    UMF students may study Chinese language and culture at Beijing University of Technology in Beijing, China. Students earn 16 credits for a combination of coursework in the skill areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Prerequisite(s): At least two semesters of college Chinese and permission of instructor. May be repeated for up to 32 credits. (Pass/Fail option) Every year. Credit: 1-16

    UMF Students may spend the spring semester on exchange at Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, England. Students earn 16 credits for successful completion of four 4-credit courses. (A program fee will be charged in addition to regular tuition.) Every year. Credit: 1-16
  • 12.00 - 16.00 Credits

    UMF students may study Russian language and culture at Komi Pedagogical Institute in Syktyvkar, Russia. Students earn 12-16 credits for a combination of coursework in such topics as grammar, literature, cultural studies and other topics pertinent to their majors. With prior approval, students may enroll in 12-14 credits abroad plus one 1-4 credit independent study with a regular UMF faculty member. Prerequisite(s): At least two semesters of college Russian and permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every year. Credit: 1-16
