Prepares people who want to work as first responders and rescue personnel who are in first aid and emergency care training. Lifesaving techniques are taught to stabilize the patient until the ambulance arrives. Upon successful completion of this course and the state written and practical exams, the student will be eligible for Maine State Licensure. (54 hours) Prerequisite: Reading Comprehension

Covers scene safety and universal precautions, American Heart CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator uses, basic first aid, and hazardous materials. Students will be introduced to the following topics: lifestyles that contribute to heart attack and stroke, signs and symptoms of heart attack, various CPR and rescue breathing skills, first aid skills, and hazardous materials in the workplace. Prepares ambulance and rescue personnel, police officers, and fire fighters to administer out-of-hospital emergency medical care. The laboratory component provides practice in patient assessment, airway management, CPR, automatic external defibrillation, oxygen delivery, PAST, dressings and hemorrhage control, splinting, spinal immobilization, childbirth, lifting and moving patients, and extrication. This course includes clinical experience in a hospital emergency department and/or ambulance service. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to sit for the State EMT-Basic Licensure Exams. (117 hours), Prerequisite: Reading Comprehension

Prepares currently licensed First Responders to administer out-of-hospital emergency medical care. Designed for experienced advanced allied health care providers (RN, PA-C, and NP) to provide exposure to the field of EMS. Students will complete a minimum of 84 hours of didactic and practical time, including a precepted ride-a-long with a local EMS agency. Goals of the course include review of EMS operations, provision of care in the out-of-hospital environment, and management of patients in the out-of-hospital setting with a variety of medical and traumatic conditions. Upon successful completion of this course, participants may apply to take the NREMT-Basic exam and pursue state licensure as an EMT-Basic. (80 hours)

Introduces the student to the role of the Advanced Life Support Provider. Topics covered include roles and responsibilities of ALS providers, medical terminology, self-care, and initial patient stabilization and management. Students will learn how to obtain a history and perform a physical assessment on a patient. (45 lec hours, 0 lab hours) Prerequisites: Certificate indicating successful completion of the DOT EMT-Basic class (and subsequent refresher training where appropriate), successful completion of NEEMS-required preadmission testing, and meeting all program admission requirements.
