Various types of equipment including rigging, cranes, mechanical conveyors, pneumatic conveyors, elevators and lift trucks will be discussed. Practical applications and use guidelines will be presented to promote the safe and efficient utilization of this type of material handling equipment. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE COMPETENCIES: Understand potential hazards of moving and handling materials. Identify precautions necessary when moving materials manually and mechanically. Identify safeguard measures to follow when stacking materials. Identify safety measures necessary regarding conveyors, cranes, lift trucks, elevators, and slings. Metallurgical concepts of steel and iron production, properties of metals, testing of metals, carbon and its rule, heat-treating, steel designations, and cast iron and non-ferrous metals are introduced. Students will participate in lab exercises examining the properties of metal, an introduction to machine shop practices of safety, measurement, and machining. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE COMPETENCIES: Understand properties of various types of metals, steel designations, cast iron and non-ferrous metals. Understand how to test metals, the rule of carbon, and heat-treating. Identify and use layout tools and precision measuring tools. Identify the proper use of hand tools. Identify and practice safety rules. Identify types of metal cutting saws, their parts, and controls. Cut stock with various hand and power saws. Cut internal and external threads.
