PREREQUISITES: CLTS 1031, CLTS 2201 COURSE OBJECTIVES: Describe blood bank procedures necessary to collect and process donor blood, prepare blood components, identify blood group antigens and antibodies, select compatible blood components for transfusion, investigate transfusion reactions, and maintain quality control and quality assurance. Explain donor collection, processing, component preparation, and storage. Identify the components of each major blood group system and discuss the importance of each system. Explain the significance of hemolytic disease of the newborn and its prevention and treatment. Select blood components for transfusion and indicate what components are required in specified cases. Apply laboratory skills to compatibility testing and antibody identification. Describe the investigation of transfusion reactions. Discuss safety, quality control and quality assurance in the blood bank. Collect and safely handle biological specimens for specific analytic procedures. Perform accurate laboratory testing in hematology coagulation and urinalysis. Describe and perform appropriate operation of equipment, preventative maintenance, and corrective maintenance, and corrective maintenance procedures.
