An in-depth study of some of the novels, short-stories, dramas, and poetry by 19th and 20th centuries Spanish writers, such as Perez-Galdos, Unamuno, Valle-Inclan, Pio Baroja, Garcia-Lorca, Machado, Jimenez, et al. Texts are representative of the literary and cultural trends that have given form to the contemporary Latin-American novel during this time. It includes an examination of the novel as a literary genre, and of the Latin American sense of identity. The authors are well-known in and outside Latin America, such as Asturias, Garcia Marquez (both Nobel laureates), Rulfo, Vargas-Llosa, Rosario Castellanos, and others. Designed for science majors outside MARS, this is a survey of the organisms living in the marine environment. Lecture topics include an overview of the special properties of seawater that influence marine ecosystems and of the major habitats of the ocean. Primary focus is on a systematic description of the plants and animals that inhabit this environment and explanations of how they interact with the ocean and one another and are adapted to life in the sea.
