Students will explore and analyze all the particular elements of successful, professional screenplay; including a more intense examination of story structure, conflict resolution and character development. Writing experiments and critically evaluative discussion will be integral to the course. The creation of a successful, professional, longer form screenplay will be required. Open to juniors and seniors only. (Same as CRIM 2313.) This is a course on crime and the media. The main aim of the course is to analyze and understand the picture of crime and the criminal justice system that is portrayed by the major mass media in the US. Crime movies, television crime dramas, television and newspaper crime news and advertising are analyzed for their portrayal of crime and the government's struggle with the crime problem. A central concern of the course is exploring the discrepancy between media versions of the crime and its reality, as we can best document it. Faculty: D.
