This class will examine various contemporary theories of communication, including pragmatic theory, rhetorical theory, orality/literacy theory, and media theory. Students will write a position paper and give an oral report on selected theoretical reading, provide outlines of assigned theories on certain topics, and write about their own perspective on communication theory. Prerequisite: CO 102. Fall semester, even-numbered years.

Focuses on refining reporting and journalistic writing skills beyond basic news writing. The journalist will work at conceptualizing and writing articles for a contemporary audience. Covers the principles and practice of proofreading, copy-editing, rewriting, and headline writing for print. Areas of instruction also focus on the packaging of news and information for an intended audience and the inter-relationships of writing and photography, news and feature writing, and layout and design principles.
