-
2.00 Credits
2 hours credit This course introduces the interrelationships within and between the Biotic and Abiotic. The student will get hands on experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting environmental data. Prerequisite: BIOL-0131 should be taken concurrently
-
4.00 Credits
4 hours credit In a systematic study of the gross anatomical organizations of the human body, students examine the interrelationships of the structure of the human body and the general structure and functions of tissues, organs, and organ systems by means of small mammal dissections, models, skeletons, charts, and audio visual materials. Six hours lecture/integrated lab are required each week. This course is recommended for Life Science and Health Career majors only.
-
5.00 Credits
5 hours credit This introductory course examines the structure and function of the organ systems of the body. Particular attention is paid to the role of the organ systems in maintaining homeostasis. Students examine structures by means of small dissections, models, skeletons, charts, and audiovisual materials. Physiological data is measured and collected. This course is not intended to satisfy requirements for anatomy and physiology for some allied health programs, especially pre-nursing and pre-physical therapy assistant.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit Nutrition is a general biology course for building knowledge about nutrients in food. Students study how nutrients are used by the body and their relation to the new pyramid food groups and food labels. Proper nutrition for each stage of the human life cycle will be examined, as well as good nutrition in exercise, considerations of diet related health problems, and individual diet assessments.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit Environmental Geology is an introduction to our natural environment and the human interactions and everyday problems with our environment and global community from a geological perspective. Topics to be covered will include; Earth Materials and Structure, Human Population Growth, Environmental Hazards such as Floods and Earthquakes, Pollution of the Environment, Waste Disposal, Natural Resources, and Energy Sources and their exploitation.
-
1.00 Credits
1 hour credit This course introduces the interrelationships within and between geologic processes and the environment. The student will get hands on experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting data. Prerequisite: BIOL-0155 should be taken concurrently.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit Kinesiology provides a link between muscular origin and insertion and the mechanics of muscular action. Knowledge of the body mechanics and the body as a lever system assists students in the ability to analyze movement. This course will satisfy BIOL core requirements for graduation for OTA students only. Prerequisites: Human Anatomy and Laboratory, BIOL- 158 0141, Physiology, BIOL-0271/Physiology Laboratory, BIOL- 0272, English Composition I, ENGL-0101.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit Students will be introduced to the profession of clinical laboratory science and the role of clinical laboratorians in the health care team. Introduction to the profession will include a discussion of the major areas of the clinical laboratory, education requirements to enter the profession and issues impacting the laboratory and health care as a whole. In the broader scope, students will be exposed to basic rules of medical terminology. Finally a systems approach will be utilized to introduce students to medical laboratory tests that aid in diagnosis and monitoring of body functions.
-
5.00 Credits
5 hours credit This course, for biology majors, is a whole-organism approach to the evolution and diversity of life, concentrating on plants and animals. Emphasis is placed upon structure/function relationships and phylogenetic origins of taxonomic groups. This course is divided into two parts, with lectures coordinated with labs as closely as possible. Generally, a section covering bacteria, fungi and plants will extend about 7 weeks. The remainder of the semester will cover protistans and animals. Prerequisite: General Biology, BIOL-0121.
-
3.00 Credits
3 hours credit The principles of animal biology and basic life processes are covered with special consideration given to the ecology, evolution, and comparative physiology of the great groups of animals.
