3 hours credit The Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries course is designed to give students the knowledge to recognize and treat injuries as they occur in athletics or recreational activities. This course is designed for any person interested in the health professional field, as an athletic trainer, coach, or those involved in recreational activities, to help recognize and care for injuries or potential injuries they may encounter.

3 hours credit This course is a survey of scientific principles, methodologies, and research as applied to exercise and physical fitness. The emphasis is on physiological responses and adaptation to exercise. Basic elements of exercise physiology, kinesiology, and motor learning are addressed. Prerequisite: BIOL- 0141, Human Anatomy and Laboratory, BIOL-0271/0272, Physiology and Physiology Laboratory.

The topics covered include health appraisal, exercise testing and prescription for patients ranging from apparently healthy to those with known disease. 3 hours credit Practicum in Athletic Training is a class designed to give the student opportunity to develop skills that a certified athletic trainer may use on a daily basis. This class is designed to give the opportunity to develop such skills through laboratory experiences, athletic training room and game observations, lectures and demonstrations.

3 hours credit This is one of the required courses in the Personal Training Certificate and should be done during the final semester. It brings an active learning experience which enables the student to gain practical experience in the area of administration, planning and leadership, and providing services in the wellness & fitness field, under the supervision of a qualified wellness specialist. The practicum augments academic experiences by helping to bridge the gap between academics and a professional future. This will take place on-site at the Wellness & Fitness Center at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The practicum consists of 3 hours per week for 16 weeks. Students will be assigned and trained to perform Wellness/Fitness related duties that will be evaluated by the assigned supervisor. Prerequisites: BIOL-0143, Human Anatomy and Physiology, EXSC-0115, First Aid, EXSC-0290, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.

3 hours credit This course is to prepare students majoring in physical education, recreation, sport management, special education, exercise science, and related disciplines. The student is acquainted with history and overview of adaptive physical education and sports, the organization and management of programs and an overview of various types of disabilities. Students will also learn about individual education programming, measurement and appraisal, behavior management, perceptual-motor development, and assistive devices.

1 hour credit A certified course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This course will qualify the student to administer CPR in certain basic life support situation. It will also meet program requirements when CPR is part of the program curriculum. This is community CPR - adult, child and infant, and includes AED training certified by the American Heart Association.

3 hours credit Art Appreciation is a general introduction to the visual arts, media, techniques, and history. The course is designed to create a deeper appreciation of the creative processes involved in the visual arts. Reviews two- and three-dimensional art forms, methods, and media; examines the visual elements and principles of design; and briefly surveys art styles from the prehistoric to the 20th Century. It is oriented to students who have not been exposed to the formal study of these disciplines. It is a beginning level class to familiar students with the different types of art and to learn how to speak/write intelligently about art.

3 hours credit This course is an introduction to World Art from the Prehistoric Period through the Late Medieval and Gothic. It will investigate the painting, sculpture, and architecture of the different periods and place an emphasis on the elements of style which identify them. There is no prerequisite for this course.
