This course presents the history of logistics in modern warfare through Desert Storm. The focus of the course is on the influence and importance of logistics on warfare from the tactical to the operational level. Campaign studies will consider major campaigns in history and how logistics affected the conduct of military operations. Studies of the campaigns will start with an overview of the wars in which they occurred in order to present the context of the issues. A case study of each campaign will be conducted with an examination of the facets of supporting the campaigns through the offices of the quartermasters in the armies. Discussions of the campaigns will center on the supply issues in preparation for battles, the supply during battles, and the reconstitution of supplies after the battles. Particular concern in the discussions will be related to the improvisation, which frequently occurred to make the logistics effort successful (or not).
