A structured learning experience offered as an extension of the regular curriculum. It is intended to allow students to broaden their comprehension of the principles of, and their grasp of competencies associated with academic, nonvocational disciplines. Its purpose is to supplement extant English courses with individualized, in-depth learning experiences. Such learning experiences may be undertaken independent of the traditional classroom setting, but will be appropriately directed and supervised by regular instructional staff. A course in the development of speech skills, the pronunciation of English and English sentence patterns, some English reading comprehension, and an understanding of American customs and diversity. An introductory English class with emphasis on survival skills, it is open to all students whose first, primary or home language is Spanish, regardless of the student's age, place of residence, ethnic background, academic plans or previous educational attainment. A variety of materials and techniques will be made available to the student to meet his or her needs. This course is designed so that anyone can benefit from it, but especially it will help those who are new to the college life or who seriously want to improve their skills. This course is designed for those students who know they are not good spellers and would like to improve their skills. Spelling rules and techniques will be learned with frequently used core words being stressed. The student will also master specific words that he or she needs to conquer. Instruction will be in small groups when possible with frequent instructorstudent conferences as the student progresses at his or her own rate in a clearly outlined individualized program. This course is intended to be a basic introductory course in vocabulary development for those students who need or want to improve. Dictionary skills, knowledge of prefixes, roots and suffixes, and easily confused words will be stressed. Techniques for improving one's own vocabulary will be learned. This course is a continuation of Vocabulary I, but it involves working with more sophisticated words and includes intensive drill on the individual's vocabulary choice. Various programmed materials will be used with frequent instructor-student conferences as the student progresses at his own rate of speed in a clearly outlined individualized program. Fulfills: Developmental Course Prerequisite: ENGL 1115 Vocabulary I with a grade of C or better or ASSET Writing Skills score of at least 30 or ACT English score of at least 11 or SAT Verbal score of at least 270

This course is designed to promote the development of reading, spelling, vocabulary, and study skills in order for the student to survive and to succeed in college classes. This course, designed for students with special needs, concentrates on skill development in the effective use of grammar in written language. Guidelines for basic grammar will be emphasized so that students can identify structural difficulties in writing and effectively use grammatical terminology to discuss written passages.
