Prerequisite: Students must have musical skill commensurate with a second year music major including performance level, theory, and ear training. This course will cover basic concepts necessary to understand, perform, and teach the fundamentals of jazz improvisation. Means to achieve this goal include studies in style, theory, ear training, and application. Topics include major, minor, dominant, chromaticism, the major ii V7 I progression, blues, tune learning, transcription, and style periods. (Fall, Winter, Spring)

Prerequisite: Music 246A or permission of instructor. Jazz Improvisation 2 is the second of a two-part sequence. The two semesters combined more fully cover the basic concepts necessary to play and teach jazz improvisation. Topics include the minor ii half-dim V7(b9) i chord progression, altered dominants, diminished and half-diminished, pentatonics, rhythm changes, advanced tune learning and transcription, cycles and turnarounds, chord substitutions, the gig format, and jazz styles.
