Through case studies, this course will look at the geography, geology, history, and social impact of outdoor recreation in the United States, with special emphasis on the National Park system. Potential conflicts between management for recreation or preservation, and between financing parkland acquisition vs. development of existing sites, will be examined. 0.000 TO 4.000 Credit Hours 0.000 TO 4.000 Lecture hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Lecture Social Science & Human Srv College Geography Department

This course provides an introduction to the geological sciences, covering geological materials and processes, and including an historical background. We also look at the practical applications of geology to everyday life. Students learn to: understand the scientific method; identify and understand the processes of formation of the major geologic materials (rocks/minerals, resources); appreciate the earth's interior and surface processes; gain an overview of the physical and biological history of the earth, including its formation; identify the ways in which geology affects their lives; and discover interactions between geology and other realms of knowledge. 0.000 TO 4.000 Credit Hours 0.000 TO 4.000 Lecture hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Lecture Theoretical & Applied Science College Environmental Science Department Course Attributes: GE-SCIENCE W EXPERIENTIAL

This course provides an introduction to geology. Topics examined are solid earth materials and processes (the formation and recycling--by weathering and erosion--of rocks and minerals), the structure and function of the oceans and atmosphere processes, and the physical and biological histories of the Earth. Course material is presented in a plate tectonic framework. Students learn to: understand the Scientific Method; identify and understand the processes of formation of the major rock-forming minerals, and common igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks; appreciate the Earth's interior, including the structure of the Earth, and plate tectonic processes, including the formation of resultant features (volcanoes, earthquakes, mountain belts, ocean basins, and structural geologic features); identify and understand the major surface processes acting on the continents (weathering, erosion, soils, water, ice, and wind); identify and understand the major oceanic processes acting in the ocean basins and on the continental shelf; comprehend the major atmospheric processes and climate systems; gain an overview of the physical and biological history of the Earth, including its formation; identify the ways in which geology affects their lives; and discover interactions between geology and other realms of knowledge. 0.000 TO 4.000 Credit Hours 0.000 TO 4.000 Lecture hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Lab, Lecture Theoretical & Applied Science College Geology Department Course Attributes: GE-SCIENCE W EXPERIENTIAL
