    This is a reading skills course for students whose native language is not English and who are reading at a pre-college level. It is for students who were exempt from the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program or who have near-native proficiency in English but who simply want more intensive work on particular aspects of their reading and English language skills. This course is designed to help you develop your academic reading strategies and to practice a variety of critical reading skills using college-level texts. In addition, it will help you expand your academic vocabulary and improve your writing and conversational skills so that you are able to successfully negotiate the demands of your college coursework. Major instructional approaches are writing process instruction, conference centered writing instruction, and small group work. With this in mind, particular emphasis will be placed on self-expression through speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
