    This course explores critical environmental issues from a scientific perspective. Basic scientific concepts are introduced and then applied to gain understanding of a wide variety of issues associated with human population growth, global climate change, energy, pollution, and the preservation of biodiversity.     This course combines field observations, lectures and research projects to investigate the ecology, paleontology, and physical landscape (geomorphology) or New Jersey and surrounding areas. The principle theme of the course is the dynamic nature of ecological and geological systems. Specific topics include: ecological succession, forest health, dynamics, biodiversity and restoration, history of life, fossil identification, paleo-ecosystem reconstruction, and climate change. There will be field excursions to High Point State Park, NJ (high-elevation bog), Hickory Run State Park, PS (glacial boulder field), Catskill Mountain region (ecological gradients, landforms, and 300 million year old ocean fossils), the Pine Barrens (pigmy pine plains, fire ecology), Barnegat coastline (dune succession and ecology, coastal processes), and fossil sites in Stroudsburg, PA and Montague NJ (390 million year old ocean life), and Sewell, NJ (65 million year ocean life).
