This course is structured as an introduction to three very different artistic traditions, from different parts of the world. In exploring these different cultures of art, we will get a sense of how, along with styles and techniques, the very purposes of art (what and who it is for, how it works) are different around the world. We will explore the artistic traditions from three very different areas of the globe: North America, the Caribbean, and Asia, spending approximately one month on each of these areas. Each unit will include an experiential component of looking at live art, whether here at Ramapo or in a museum or gallery. Four critical issues will tie these different units together, and in each section we will reconsider these questions in short written assignments. These four themes/critical issues are: 1) The representation of history and group identity; 2) The role of the artist within the society; 3) Ritual, Festival, and Religious Arts; and 4) Constructing the Individual Self: Gender, Class and Identity. 0.000 TO 4.000 Credit Hours 0.000 TO 4.000 Lecture hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Lab, Lecture Contemporary Arts College Art History Department Course Attributes: GE-INTERNATIONAL ISSUES

This class introduces students to some of the major themes, questions, and problems occupying visual artists today and provides a historical context for understanding them. The course examines a diverse range of issues in contemporary art by studying the artists, theorists and critics who have made these issues relevant, and by making connections between these various kinds of cultural output. We will consider how social, economical and technological changes have impacted the arts over the past century and how artists have both responded to and initiated these changes. Scheduled "lab" times are used for on-site visits to museums, galleries, artists' studios or other venues; the lab time will be used only 3-5 times per semester, and dates will be announced on the syllabus. 0.000 TO 4.000 Credit Hours 0.000 TO 4.000 Lecture hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Lab, Lecture Contemporary Arts College Art History Department Course Attributes: WRITING INTENSIVE
