Expands on students' understandings of children's literacy development,emphasizing middle level learning, and the teacher's role in these processes. Using a balanced approach to literacy instruction with importance given to the promotion and development of comprehension strategies, students learn to select and use materials appropriately; employ strategies to meet the cognitive and affective literacy needs of all children; and collect, integrate, and use data from various forms of assessment to inform teaching and learning processes.
